Project 2

Passages, Illusions of Time and Space

Using asymmetrical balance, create a dynamic 6x9”design that communicates the illusion space and motion. Materials: Prismacolor Pencils (grays, black and white) and Bristol Paper

Part 1 (20 points) Due Sept 19th (beginning of class)
Make a Value Scale:
1)    Using either “dry point”, or “wet” technique, draw a seven-part value scale using black and white as the end values. (see example below)

2)    Use a ruler to carefully measure squares that are 1”. The values should step evenly from one to the next in a continuous line.

Part 2 (60 points) Due Sept 24th (beginning of class)
Create three nonobjective 6x9” space-motion mock-ups emphasizing asymmetrical compositions
1)    Brainstorm and sketch imagery for your project using found resources as needed.
2)    Consider the following Spatial Triggers to suggest the illusion of space.
a.     Size Diminishment
b.     Contrast Diminishment (value, saturation, clarity, etc.)
3)    Consider the following Motion Triggers to suggest the illusion of movement.
a.     Anticipated Motion
b.     Repeated Figure
c.     Multiple Image
d.     Blurred Outline
Part 3 (100 points) Due Oct3rd (beginning of class)
Using achromatic silhouettes, create an ASYMETTRICAL design that expresses Space and Motion:

1)    Using a light table or other transfer method, copy your best design onto Bristol Paper. Finish the final 6x9” work using gray Prismacolor pencils.
